Tip of The Week

October 20, 2007

This week’s tip comes from our “I’m retaining water and I’m happy about it” file.

With our part of the country in the wicked grip of this drought, we thought it prudent to discuss some ideas that are simple and, if practiced consistently, can have a very favorable impact on water consumption. Before you read any of these consider this.  If you have not shut your irrigation system off do it now.  Seriously, this drought is for real and you are not exempt from doing your part to save water.  Now with that out of the way here are a few ideas:
  • Use the water from your dehumidifier to waterplants.
  • ● If you don’t have a dehumidifier consider the investment.  Less humid air is easier to cool and you are more comfortable at higher room temperatures when humidity is reduced.  These benefits will save on your cooling costs.
  • ● Depending on the location of the drain for your Air Conditioning unit you may be able to capture that water for plants as well.
  • ● When you start the water for your bath or shower save the cold water that comes out of the faucet first.  Use it for watering flowers.  At our house we have a bucket in each bathroom.  We save the water from starting the bath or shower and use it to flush the toilet in that bathroom.
  • ● Change your toilet to a 1.6 gallon per flush unit.
  • ● Turn the water off while you brush your teeth.  That will save about 4 gallons per minute.
  • ● Don’t let the water run continuously while you shave.
  • ● Turn off the water while you wash your hair and while you soap up your body.  Turn it back on to rinse off.
  • ● Don’t shower for a week.  (Just kidding…drought or no drought we should never lose our sense of humor)
  • ● Whenever possible take a shower instead of a bath.  Showers use less water.
  • ● Purchase a re-circulating pump for your water heater.  Units with timers are available and can be set to cycle water before you start your morning showers.  This will eliminate the need to run the shower to get the water hot.
  • ● Let the water you use to boil things cool, and use it for your plants.
  • ● If you are in the market for a new water heater then consider a tankless unit.
There are probably many other ideas you have to save water.  If you have a minute and would like to share them with us, then drop us a line and we will share your ideas with all the visitors to our website.
