Tip of The Week

This week’s tip comes from our “The best tip may
be no tip” file.
|
| |
|
If you are a regular listener to our show, (click here to get to our podcasts) you have heard us talking aboutremoving textured ceiling products to create a smooth ceiling. You have also heard us talk about repairing
and patching drywall.
|
| |
|
In both
situations the right tool is critical and for these projects a 6” tape knife is
the right tool. We have found that one small alteration makes the right tool
even better. In order to prevent gouging
the drywall as you scrape the texture off the ceiling we recommend that you
purchase an inexpensive 6” tape knife.
However, before you go to work grind the two sharp, pointed corners of
the trowel down to round them off. About
a ½” to ¾ “ arc
is fine. This will keep the sharp
corners from gouging the ceiling.

| |
|
This tip, or lack of tip, also comes in handy if
you are a novice at dry wall repair. The
rounded corners make it easier to finish larger areas without leaving a line in
the mud from the corner of the trowel.
|
| |
|
A couple of notes: If your friend has loaned you his or her good
finishing trowel you should not alter the corners unless you are mad at
them. If you have large drywall
finishing projects it probably makes more sense to buy the larger better
quality trowels. They will be worth the
modest investment. |
