Tip of The Week

This week’s tip comes from our “Am I Losing My
Marbles?” file. |
| |
|
Genuine marble sinks, tiles and counter tops are
beautiful but they can give the novice Handyman fits for a lot of reasons. |
|
|
|
One caller complained about a stain that had
developed around marble tile he had put on his counter top. When the job was done he was proud of the
look and very impressed with himself that nothing leaked. |
| |
|
After a few months he noticed a stain around the
base of the faucet and he feared a leak had developed. Removing the faucet showed not signs of a
leak. He was on city water so he doubted
that water setting around the base of the faucet was the cause of the
discoloration. After a lot of questions
and sleuthing the culprit was found. He
had used plumber’s putty to seal the base of the faucet where it came in
contact with the marble. Because the
marble is porous it absorbed the oil from the plumbers putty and became
discolored. |
| |
| The moral of the story is to use sealants
recommended by the manufacturer and to be especially careful when using some
sealants or even some types of thin set or grout on marble products. |
